Autism Awareness & Assistance - the Unity Project
Lee District Project report
reported by Anne Hunnicutt co-chairman Eunice Bailey
Our Unity Project for Lee District was assisting the Autism Society of Central Virginia. We wanted to make our members more aware of Autism. We donated money and provided volunteers for three of their special events.
One club donated $190.00 in gift cards from Target.
- On April 9, 2011, the Autism Society held their annual family picnic. We gave them $500.00 to help pay for the food. Also, we used $165.00 of the gift cards from Target to pay for supplies. We had 11 volunteers helping the day of the picnic. One Tri Club volunteer took photographs at the picnic. After the Society received the permission of the parents, these photos were posted on the website of the Autism Society of Central Virginia.
- On May 28, 2011, The Autism Society held their annual 5k Run/Walk. One of our members handed out race packets before the race. We had 10 volunteers helping the day of the race.
- On December 4, 2011, the annual holiday party for the families was held. About 150 people attended. We provided 80 gift bags for the children. We spent $247.80 to buy the items for the gift bags. We gave them $882.20 to help pay for the expenses. We had 10 volunteers come help with the party. Four of them were boys from a fraternity at VCU. Their service project for the year was to help the Autism Society of Central Virginia.
The clubs in Lee District were asked to collect money at their monthly meetings for camperships for children with Autism. This was called "Koins for Kids." A total of $1061.62 was collected for this project.
We had a raffle and silent auction at our October District meeting. This raised $480.00.
After the holiday party we received some more donations from clubs in our district that totaled $171.72. A check was sent to the Autism Society for this amount.
The clubs in Lee District donated a total of $2,015.16 out of their treasuries.
BRIDGE MARATHON: Adele Van Divender
Last call to phone, E-mail or send me your bridge marathon scores. I'll check the list and phone if I'm missing some scores. I will need to have all the scores in by the end of April so the prizes can be awarded at our final luncheon meeting on Thursday, May3.
I hope all participants in the marathon will come to my house the following Thursday, May 10 at 12PM for "charmin' chit chat' and lunch. Please let me know if you can or cannot attend so I will know how many bottles of wine to open.

Earth Day is April 22, 2012. Earth Day marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement started in 1970.
Arbor Day is April 27, 2012. Arbor Day is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages people to appreciate and care for plants and trees. It is most commonly observed in spring on the last Friday in April, though the date varies depending on climate and suitable planting season. It originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska by J.Sterling Morton. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872, and an estimated one million trees were planted that day.
Reminder:
Please dispose of any expired or unused medications correctly by using mailing envelopes available at most neighborhood pharmacies.
Thanks for your help. Lynne Moore
Education: Gretchen Bradley & Evelyn Kerschbaumer
We were very sad to learn of the sudden passing of one of our committee members, Karlyn Gleason. Karlyn was always happy and willing to participate in all that we did and always offered a helping hand with a smile. We will miss her very much.
Thank you to all of the members who donated a total of $66 to the teachers' baskets as well as school supplies for Crestview and Ridge schools. Gretchen and Evelyn will assemble and deliver the baskets, along with school supplies, to the schools.
We were happy to see the response of our members to the book cart. It will be very helpful in storing and moving the books. Also, if anyone would like to donate an audio book or two, there will be room on the cart for that.
Patrick Henry Charter School: Evelyn and Iris will assist the librarian twice a month at the school. Evelyn assisted this past month with the kindergarten and first-graders. It was a delightful experience, especially meeting the enthusiastic children! Please let us know if you wish to participate in this program.

Education: Focus on HOBY
What do you know about HOBY?
HUGH O'BRIAN
YOUTH LEADERSHIP (HOBY)
HOBY was
founded by Hugh O'Brian in 1958 in response to Dr. Albert Schweitzer's remark
"The most important thing in education is to teach young people to think
for themselves." HOBY seeks out, recognizes and rewards leadership
potential in high school sophomores by giving them the opportunity to build their
leadership skills during a three day seminar. High school sophomores are chosen
because their age is critical in focusing on future goals and forming opinions
for adulthood. These students have the unique opportunity to create a
"ripple effect" from their HOBY experience by utilizing their
remaining time in high school to lead others and lay the foundation for a
strong future. HOBY challenges students on NOT what to think but HOW to think.

Walking to our state capitals
At our April Meeting you turned in 1107.15 miles. Thanks to that number of miles, we were able to go from Madison, Wisconsin to Saint Paul, Minnesota and then on to Des Moines, Iowa. Our next stop was Springfield, Illinois and then to Jefferson City, Missouri. Later we traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas and on to Jackson, Mississippi. Our final destination was Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Thank you for your help with this project. Because of you we were able to visit 32 state capitals walking 5471.16 miles!
We say farewell and thank you for a job well done.
Remember: Keep on walkin', it's the healthy thing to do!

Take care of your eyes
Although
there is no known way to prevent macular degeneration, lifestyle
factors can reduce your risk of developing the condition. Don't smoke,
eat a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in animal fat,
exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. See your eye care
professional regularly for dilated eye exams. Don't rub your eyes.
Take PreserVision Eye Vitamin AREDS formula twice a day, every day. Join Joy of Sight to learn about AMD and how your family can lower their risk of AMD.
For a free, comprehensive kit on AMD, call toll-free 1-866-467-3262 (Hope AMD) or visit online http://www.bausch.com/joyofsight.
There are three medications that can be injected into your eye(s) that help prevent macular degeneration from progressing.

Home Life - Meals on Wheels: Beverly Lee
Tri Club delivers Meals on Wheels (MOW) the 1st Tuesday of months Sept. - May. We have 2-person teams deliver meals - one is the driver and the other one the rider. We provide Jackie at MOW with the names of ladies delivering for the month.
We also collect gifts for the recipients at the December meeting and then deliver them promptly to MOW for Christmas gifts for the recipients. The wish list for MOW recipients is detailed on page 5 in the December 2010 newsletter issue on the Forms & Publications page.
MOW recipients are usually low-income people who cannot afford food. Sometimes we deliver to people who can pay MOW but need help with buying and preparing the food.

Legislative Report: Gracie Tingle
Wrapping up the Assembly Session: Gov. McDonnell signed into law Bill 656, sponsored by Sen. McEachin, D-Henrico, that requires local school boards to adopt policies to have EpiPens on hand and for a school nurse or employee to administer to
students believed to be having an allergic reaction. The House and the Senate passed bills that would require voters without an ID to cast a provisional ballot.
Also, the governor signed a bill requiring ignition interlock device in the car for first drunk-driving conviction and he is expected to sign legislation into law guidelines concerning PE in our elementary and middle schools.
The General Assembly is in session now pondering the budget and other bills as of this writing. Will report on final out come of these bill in next newsletter.
The rally on March 3, protesting the bill requiring women to undergo an ultrasound before an abortion, netted 30 arrest. Those arrested had been sitting on the steps of the Capitol and refused to leave. They were arrested for trespassing and unlawfully
assembly. They were among several hundred people who attended the rally. (Gov. McDonnell signed the ultrasound bill into law four days later.) A June 19 trial date has been scheduled. Recently, the arrested people were offered a reduced charge.
Did you notice in the news that the Obama administration told Congress it will waive democracy requirements to release up to $1.5 billion in aid to Egypt despite concerns of backsliding on commitments to democratic governance and rule of law. This
comes on the heels of U.S. paying the Egyptians several million dollars in bail --between $4 to $5 million according to news media reports-- as part of a broad agreement to release Sam LaHood (son of Sec. of Transportation Ray LaHood) and allow him along with 18 other Americans to fly home. Sam LaHood and others were in Cairo working for a democracy rights group backed by America. The Egyptian interim military government raided and closed 17 NGOs (Non Government Organizations) including the International Republican Institute (LaHood's employer), Freedom House and the National Democratic Institute.
Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood continues to get stronger. They called on the ruling generals to get rid of the military-appointed government and appoint a Brotherhood representative as prime minister who would then form a new government. First of April, in a surprised move, the Brotherhood nominated its chief strategist and financier, Khayrat el-Shater for president. The election commission will issue a final list of presidential candidates later this month with election May 23 and 24. You wonder why I am reporting on the Muslim Brotherhood? To help us be aware of the issues and how we are affected, ---US access to the Suez Canal, Egypt's peace with Israel, Egypt as an important ally of US, foreign aid (PDF) from US, and their social and religious ideology, to name a few.
Good news: St. Mary's Hospital is planning to build a hospitality house for families of patients being treated at the hospital and the PSB special "10 Buildings That Changed America" will include the Virginia Capitol.

Everyone, please check your email's "sent folder" once a month to make sure you are the only one sending out mail. If you find something in your "sent folder" that you do not recognize, that means something has gotten into your computer and used your contacts. You may have a Spybot. See the Webmaster's report for how to get rid of Spybots. Be safe and have a great summer.
Treasurer's Report: Jane Hostetler Important notice.
The Tri Club Woman's Club 2011-12 financial books will be closed May 18, 2012. Any bills to be paid or reimbursements to be made must be requested of the treasurer by this date. After that the books will be closed and no further financial transactions will be made for the 2011-12 club year.
See the Tri Club Tribune for our proposed budget.
Webmaster: Page Peyser - Spybots
Hello, Tri Clubbers,
To detect Spybots: (1) If you receive an email with an odd message - either recommending Canadian pharmacies or more recently, telling you how to make lots of money doing online work.at home, you may have received an email sent by a Spybot virus that's gotten into someone's computer. (2) Someone else may receive an odd email from you and ask "Did you send that email to me?" (3) Another way of detecting spybots is checking in your email's "sent" folder, as noted by Johanna Gilbert in her safety report. If there is outgoing email that you did not send, then you may have a spybot problem.
Search online for "Spybot Search and Destroy." Download this free software and run it.
You may have to temporarily delete Spybot Search and Destroy when you update your anti-virus software.
